Life Legacy


Prof. Harold W. Kemp, age 88, of Chillicothe, formerly of Washburn, Il. and Gainesville, Fl., died at 11:58 p.m. Monday, March 1, at Heritage Manor in Chillicothe.
He was born March 25, 1921, in Wilburn, Il., the son of Delbert and Cora (Danhof ) Kemp.
Surviving is a brother, Ralph E. Kemp of Chillicothe, a nephew, Ron Kemp of Morton, and a niece, Jane (Kemp) Huggins of Chillicothe. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He grew up in Washburn, Illinois and graduated from Washburn High School in 1939.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from the University of Illinois in 1949 and a Master of Science degree in Architecture from the University of Illinois in 1951. He was awarded the distinguished Ricker Award from the University of Illinois, Dept. of Architecture in 1946-47. He was part owner in Phillips & Kemp, Architects in Canton for several years before moving to the University of Florida, Gainesville, teaching architectural classes until 2007 when he retired as a Professor. He was voted Professor of the Year, in 1985 by students and facility. In 1989 he was awarded the University of Florida "Excellence" Award.
Teaching was his life. He devoted most of his career to teaching others about architecture and architectural history.
He was a decorated WWII veteran, 1st Lieutenant, flying with the U.S. Air Force, 49th Bomb Squadron, 15th Air Force, 2nd Bombardment Group as a B-17 navigator. He flew 19 missions over Europe between 1943-1945.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
